H.P., as he's affectionately known, is a middle-aged novelist of middling success as well as a creative writing instructor at a midwestern university located in a landlocked, mid-sized city. He spends his spare time fixing up his dilapidated farmhouse and drinking with fellow faculty members. The Pirate Hunter, the main character of H.P.'s series of adventure books, has spent most of his career in an elite division of the Coast Guard on a fictionalized Earth where the sea levels have risen precipitously. The existential threat posed by the ever-rising waters has warped the Pirate Hunter's world, making it a desperate and dangerous reflection of our own. Through an uncanny twist of fate, H.P. finds himself in the world he thought he'd created, and now he must partner with the Pirate Hunter to prevent a disaster that threatens both their realities.
